A Renovated Adelaide Landmark That Weaves History and Modernity into Opportunity

Wavertree, located at 64 North Terrace, Kent Town, is a fully renovated historic property that exemplifies Adelaide’s grand architectural heritage while embracing contemporary design. Spanning buildings from the 1860s, 1920s, 1980s, and early 21st century, Wavertree offers a unique opportunity for a corporate headquarters, boutique hotel, or prestigious private residence. Its comprehensive restoration in 2013-14 provides the perfect foundation for any vision.
Classic Architecture with Modern Convenience
Wavertree’s rich history is embodied in its four main structures: a Victorian mansion from 1865-66, a 1920s residence with a chapel, an 1980s open plan shared workspace, and a late 2000s connecting structure.
When Simon and Anna Hackett acquired Wavertree in 2012, they hired architects Williams Burton Leopardi and builder Sarah Constructions to modernize the heritage buildings while maintaining a home-like feel.
The renovation seamlessly blends historical elements with contemporary conveniences, including structural reinforcements, two elevators, and discreet ramps for accessibility. Updated electrical, computer, and plumbing systems ensure modern functionality throughout.
Wavertree has earned recognition with two Australian Institute of Architects awards in 2016 for Heritage and Commercial Architecture, along with the Best Commercial Architecture award from the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters’ Excellence in Urban Design Awards.

A Central Courtyard Oasis

Heritage Architecture Renovated for Innovation
Each building at Wavertree contributes its unique character, blending historical charm with modern functionality. The Victorian mansion has been meticulously restored, preserving its historical integrity while meeting contemporary standards. Attention to detail is evident throughout, from the lime mortar used to restore the integrity of the original stonework to the transparent addition to the front low wooden balcony, ensuring safety without compromising aesthetic appeal.
The 1920s building, with its early 20th-century design, complements the mansion while offering expansive interiors, ideal for gatherings or office spaces. The seminar room, known as “the Chapel,” retains its original sandstone walls, creating a serene atmosphere for meetings or events.
The 1980s building adds modernist flair to Wavertree. Reflecting its media origins, this space is infused with creative energy, featuring an open-plan layout, large windows, and a full-wall commissioned artwork by Adelaide graffiti artist Kab101. The connecting building contains offices on the first floor and a commercial-grade kitchen at ground level, with sliding glass doors to the courtyards, ensuring a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
At the heart of Wavertree is a central courtyard featuring wooden decking, garden beds, and a koi pond, connecting all four buildings, including the reception area, communal kitchen, and seminar spaces. Shaded by a mature Manchurian Pear tree, it serves as a tranquil spot for meetings, reading, or reflection.
Adjacent to the kitchen, the barbeque courtyard is perfect for outdoor entertaining. Below lies a former swimming pool, now a rainwater retention tank, Additional open spaces, such as the secluded rhino courtyard behind the mansion and a front courtyard accessed through a historic gate from Gujarat, India, offer further opportunities for quiet relaxation and private gatherings.
Wavertree uniquely blends historical charm with modern functionality, with each building contributing its own character—from the meticulously restored Victorian mansion to the creative energy of the 1980s building.
